Greg is awesome. Best burger I’ve had in awhile.
today was my first time at purple onion, and i really enjoyed it! the employee who helped me was really friendly, which is always a plus. i got a tea to start out and later got a quesadilla, and i thought they were both reasonably priced for a rather trendy cafe. i mostly just camped out for a few hours doing work, but the space was really nice and clean and i had no trouble finding a seat.
Spicy chai latte with almond milk on a Sunday morning during campus-linked hustle and bustle... delightful.
A Cold breakfast served after 15 minutes. How can you setve eggs toast and sausages cold? Not even made here, ingredients bought from wallmart.Update: Now they are blaming it on me. Of course! Classic. Its not like I ate at other places and know how a restaurant functions and how to collect my self serve food at an empty restaurant. And no, you offered me another breakfast 30 minutes in which was rejected as I was not going eat another plate of your cold sausages from wallmart and eggs I can fry better myself even without the benefits of a commercial stove.
The white hot chocolate is good
Pros: Tons of spaceLots of Big Windows, and great view of campusTasty coffeeWonderful kitchenFriendly staffCons:...Just be aware that you will most likely need to do street parking, which is metered. But totes worth it. The onion is the BOMB
College hangout but it's good food in a casual setting with outdoor seating in the summer
I miss this amazing food
A popular study spot for U of M students which can make it a little too loud to get anything done. The drinks and food are great, but during the school year not always the best place to spend much time.
Unfortunately my experience was not good. I spent $40 for lunch on me and my girlfriend yet we got cold food. The problem wasn’t that they serve cold food, but that their intercom system is not operational. My order number was called to the east side of the restaurant for who knows how long, yet none of the employees bothered to call the number to the west side of the restaurant. After 35+ minutes I went to check on why my food was taking so long. It was sitting there cold. I went to the baristas and they said they wouldn’t give me a refund and that best they could do is put it in the microwave. I refused this as a response. I had them bring the manager/owner. He said “I’m not going to argue with you do you want your money back or have the food re-made?”. I opted to have my food re-made only because my girlfriend and I had already waited now 40 minutes to have lunch.
The Purple onion has become my favorite place for breakfast around campus, and basically everything they have there is reasonably priced and great value. Also, they have fantastic coffee and have a pretty diverse assortment of drink options available.
The coffee and toast were the best parts of this meal. Eggs and bacon were fine. Potatoes were blah, not hot, and very small portion.
Great pizza, though it's difficult to keep a conversation due to how loud it gets
This cozy and spacious cafe has amazing coffee drinks as well as full breakfast and lunch menus and ice cream. It's a great spot for students to study or hang out in
Atmosphere is weird, lame, plain. The chorizo burrito is blah with such big flaps of nothing but tortilla
Busy but really good! Great place to study
Expensive but good coffee, awesome atmosphere, free wifi
Lively atmosphere without seeming obnoxious. Seems like a better place for hanging out than studying but it seems people do both!
Awesome breakfast food. A lot of discounts (including cash discount). Breakfast sandwich is great!
Inconsistent, overly priced, and subpar service. I’m always disappointed the few times I’ve gone. I ordered a grilled cheese for $8. I got a two small sandwiches with VERY little cheese inside and a small bag of chips. I pretty much ate toasted bread with some tomatoes. Not worth $8 at all. If you’re on campus and want a grilled cheese sandwich then go to Annie’s. Better service, quality, and worth your money.
My daughter and I stopped here for a cup of coffee, which was very good! We saw it as we were driving by, and decided it looked like a cool place to stop, which it certainly was! Next time we are in the area we will have some lunch with our coffee as the food looked and smelled delicious!
Went here to study with some friends. It had loads of space with plenty of tables. The atmosphere was nice and the food was pretty good. You can order coffee and just study. Great place for students to study for finals.
The ice cream is great. They host Fool's Errand, which is a hilarious comedy show on Friday nights. Highly suggest going for that, but the foods not too bad either!
I only have been here once but it was clean. It was quick and friendly service. There was a ton of options but I only had a coffee. If you're close by and need coffee or ice cream. This is a easy stop.
Love the Purple Onion's commitment to preserving the environment and supporting local business. Wide selection of food and coffee. Cost atmosphere, tons of windows for a connection to the outdoors. Great place adjacent to campus to study and meet with friends.
Ive been to the Purple Onion a handful of times and it just struck me today how much I appreciate it. You will not find better quality food for the same price anywhere else near campu . A warm tuna melt with fries and a large vanilla coffee for 12 dollars flat is something that should not be taken for granted. The staff is friendly and there is plenty of room to meet with friends or hide in a corner to study. 12/10 would recommend.
It's a wonderful blast from the past. Coffee, food, meetings for conversation, business, study. A happy place.
I was a fan of this place back when it was in the old location with Bob Dylan up on the wall. The new location has great tables for reading and studying and well situated. They have a huge menu of every coffee you can imagine including their great cold press. The staff is very friendly.
The space is okay but the food was truly terrible. We ordered a pizza and a pain au chocolat. The pizza took well over 30 minutes, was incredibly greasy, and was basically a pile of cheese that slid off what little soaked crust there was. The vegetables on the pizza were slimy and had no flavor. The pain au chocolat tasted like it had been store-bought 4 days ago, drizzled with cheap hot sauce, and microwaved. Overall a really disappointing experience. I would recommend going elsewhere for food.
Excellent Service! There was a slightly screw up on my order. I originally told them not to worry about it. But the owner was worried he went above & beyond. When most people would go 100% he went double. To make sure customers satisfaction. Knew that I had to walk across campus. Gave me a box to carry it all in that came in handy.Well worth the screw up delicious food. Highly recommend when your looking to eat off campus.
With a beautiful patio and awesome food this place is amazing and shouldn’t be overlooked. The Tuna sandwich and Mexican veggie sandwich with Cajun fries was amazing. Will definitely visit again.
It's a decent place to sit down and work or have a conversation. While there, I ordered a hot chocolate. It was as expected, nothing too extravagant. I am not the type of person to spend many hours in coffee shops, so my stay was sufficient. All in all I would recommend in most cases.
As a vegan I don't expect every restaurant to cater to my needs, it would be nice to see more additions to the Veggie Platter that are vegan-friendly. Some beans or rice would be good or you could some tofu too. The Herbivorous Butcher or Beyond Meat are also good companies that make alternative plant-based meat! I just wish the options were more than (unseasoned) onions, mushrooms, and peppers.
I used to love this place, but in recent months they've changed everything I enjoyed about it. The college-aged students that work there are the only redeemable part of the experience. The new management/staff etc are loud, rude, and consistently interrupt customer experiences. There entire menu changed as well, so half the classics I enjoyed here when I started college are gone. Would recommend one of the other coffee shops, literally any of them.
The staff is super friendly and oddly great with small talk. Nice place to get some work done for school or just quietly read a book. Just a genuinely good cafe.
The food tastes good and the staff is great, but system for picking up your food (having your order number announced over an intercom) is not ideal, with how spread out the seating is and the music being played over the speakers making it hard to hear.
The people who work here are nice and it is a huge space, but It seriously needs a huge renovation, or to be torn down. The place is filthy, there are rats and mice, the kitchen is horribly dirty. I am surprised I didn't get a disease from eating here.
Homemade ice cream and pizza from 2 to 10pm! What could be better?! 😍😍👅🍕🍦☕
Very friendly service. Excellent quality food and got a great deal - a specialty pizza and 2 free milkshakes. Thank you!
This wonderful cafe has been here forever and it always is buzzing with people! Perhaps some might not like it because of this but personally I love the lively atmosphere because there is plenty of space all around. Amazing dark roast, lattes, mochas, etc. They do it all! And they have icecream and the kitchen open until 2pm. Great food and sandwiches as well!
Strange name but good food. Was there early on a Saturday and it was quiet. Enjoyed a meal with some friends. I would stop here again.
I love to study here! Staff are great.
The food was pretty good! I got the all American breakfast. The bacon was great! The potatoes were a bit undercooked, but I kinda like them that way so it was no problem. All my friends really loved their food too and said the coffee was amazing. My only problem was with the hot coco, which just tasted like milky water. Absolutely no flavor.
Warm and well-lit café on campus. Ordered this freshly baked cranberry and orange muffin...loved it!...definitely coming back again🙌
Great space, great food and great atmosphere. You’re missing out if you haven’t tried their ice cream.
such an amazing place. Gives off a chill kind of vibe. Food was great as well as the service
Ok place near campus. Coffee wasn't especially good and they messed up our order. Good place to meet up with people from the U but it is noisy.
While I will always love the old location more, the espresso here is fantastic.
Above average Tuna Melt and Roast Beef sandwiches that are are not complete without the buttery crunchy goodness of the bread!
